Overbite Correction : An overbite is misalignment or malocclusion of the lower and upper rows of teeth. An overbite forces the upper teeth in a forward position in relation to the lower teeth. It is common for overbites to cause jaw pain, headaches, deformed chin, and a less healthy looking facial appearance.
People with the worst cases of overbite may find themselves clenching or grinding their teeth. If not treated, overbites can contribute to dental issues such as tooth decay and gum diseases. In the most severe cases, overbite may affect the ability to speak and chew food.
Some cases of overbite play a role in affecting the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) which connects the skull to the jaw. This results in jaw pain that is commonly referred to as TMJ pain. It is common for people with an overbite to experience pain that spreads to other areas of the body from the TMJ area causing migraines and headaches.
Causes of Overbite
Most instances of overbite care caused as a result of hereditary issues and first become apparent when children’s teeth first grow. In the cases of overbite, children’s teeth grow in a haphazard direction and when hit the adjacent teeth, completely stop growing. These symptoms are worsened if the child has the habit of thumb sucking. The child may end up putting similar pressure on the lower jaw, forcing it backward.
Types of Overbite
There are two types of overbite, skeletal and dental.
Skeletal Jaw: in this case, the lower jaw is too physically small to properly fit inside the upper jaw. This will require a surgical solution for jaw realignment.
Dental Overbite: this is the result of improperly aligned teeth. In this case, the lower jaw is properly balanced with the upper jaw, but a slightly incorrect arrangement of the teeth pushes the lower jaw back into the neck. This will require overbite treatment (usually nonsurgical) to correct the dental overbite.
